Finally, i found some time to work on my game Stay Calm.
This game started out as an entry for the 1 week Brackeys Game Jam 2024.2 and has got some pretty good feedback, but also a lot of requests. Finally i found the time to sit at my computer and work some more on my game, adding a lot of requested features and better input. But more on that later. First i want to say that i really enjoyed so many people having a good time playing the game, and i'm really excited about the future of this project, what it will become if i push through and keep working hard.
Now, lets talk business, the first thing i implemented was better input for the controller. It looked like my controller left stick was sometimes hanging and kept giving me input values even tho i let it go for some time. Seems like a good old deadzone for the stick can do wonders, it is now much more smooth. Also, and this was the biggest request i’ve seen during the jam, i implemented keyboard/mouse controls. Try it out and let me know if it feels good because i am a gamepad player by heart, so for me it is not comfortable to play with keyboard/mouse, but i think i did a pretty good job :)
The only loot the robots would drop was a “weapon spread” upgrade for your gun, making the spread go from 1 line to 2 lines, to 3 lines and at max you have 5 lines of bullets. It was good but with only 1 item to drop it felt a bit like there was room for more. So i added a “weapon range” upgrade, which will make your bullets fly further which is nice if you know that you get more points for killing a robot further away than one standing right next to you, and a “shield” upgrade which will, you guessed it, give the player a shield so they can survive 1 hit without dying (but they lose the shield instead).
Also, there are now "paperclip" grenade pickups you can find on the (still rather small) map, which will give the player 3 grenades (of the type “paperclip”) they can throw at the robots. And no fear, you can not blow yourself up, the “paperclip” grenade is a smart one which will only harm the robots if they are close enough.
And lastly, i added other music. It sounds good but i’m not convinced yet if this music will make it in next versions. I also added some really cool robotic voice which will call out any pickup the player does and the end of a wave or the level. The voice was created with “Samantha”, a voice in the TTS application built into my Mac, poor some magic over it in Audacity and tadaaa a very nice female robotic voice!
More coming features that did not make it in this version are, more weapons so you can shoot something else than the machinegun, more robots, a bigger and more maps to play on and couch co-op gameplay. I hope you enjoy this next version of the game, and as always, if you have any feedback and/or positive criticism, feature requests or if you found any bugs, please let me know and i’ll make it happen :)
